MEET THE TEAM

Get to know a little bit more about us.

BRETT HOPPENBROUWER

I grew up loving Australian wildlife. I loved learning about it so much that in order to get native Australian themed toys, I asked my parents to buy Yowies. It turned out that I'm allergic to chocolate, so I got them to eat the chocolate while I collected the toys. I maintained my interests in the environment and science, even when Yowies were taken off the market. In high school I started a school environmental group to clean up litter in the local area. The group helped organise tree donations and volunteer planting teams in Planet Ark's National Tree Day.

As part of the Trashy Science team I’m now combining 13 years of theatre and circus training with nine years of science communication, both in voluntary and professional settings, to talk with people about how we can work together to make life a little less rubbish.

LAWRENCE MENZ

I've had Australian nature in my life for as long as I can remember whether it was the resident blue tongued lizard (always called "Lizzie"), the camping trips in the Flinders Ranges, or the intricate gum nut jewellery that my family bought. As I would raise questions about the world to my dad, he would lead me on these fantasmagorical explanations which I would then eagerly pass on to my friends. That is until he would admit later on that they were blatant lies. As such, my journey into science was borne from spite, as I realised I needed to find out the answers myself.

In Trashy Science, I am bringing my passion for engaging with people, a bit of technology, and the ability to reach things on the top shelf without a step ladder. I'm the one photographing, shooting and editing almost everything (at least until I teach the others how to do it).

LEISHA DUNCAN

Heya! My name is Leisha, and I'm obsessed with flora and nature.

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been inspired by nature and have been constantly amazed by the incredible world around us. I was always a curious kid, which may have driven my parents a bit nuts since I was always asking ‘why’, but to be honest, not much has changed. I love being outdoors and experiencing nature and it is this joy that I want to share with others. This enthusiasm eventually led me to a degree in Environmental Biology where I explored my passion for protecting our environment even further.

As part of the Trashy Science team, I’m bringing together two of my loves, the environment and talking. I am so excited to start this journey to share my knowledge as well as learn from others to help make the world a better place, one conversation at a time!
